A Quick Guide to Using Different Shaped Area Rugs
Share
Not all area rugs are rectangular, although rectangle is the most common rug shape. At Natural Rug Co., we have a wide selection of traditionally rectangular area rugs and runners, but also round, oval, square and octagonal options.
So where and how do you use different area rug shapes? Here's a quick guide.
Rectangular
Because rectangular area rugs are so popular, you probably aren't stumped as to where to use them. That being said, it is important to keep in mind that choosing the correct size rectangular rug (or any shape rug, for that matter) and placing it correctly is important.
When used to anchor a room or seating area, a rectangular area rug should be large enough that at least the front legs of any couches or chairs are on it. Likewise, if used under a dining table, a rectangular area rug should be large enough to fit under all chair legs when chairs are pulled out.
In the bedroom, a rectangular rug used under the bed should stick out about two feet on at least either side and the end of the bed. A rectangular rug can also be placed horizontally so that two-thirds of it is under the bed.
Runners
A longer, narrower version of the rectangular area rug, a runner is a great way to provide visual interest and underfoot softness to a hallway. Keep in mind that when choosing runner, it should be long enough to cover at least three-quarters of the length of the hallway.
A runner may also be used to create underfoot coziness on either side of or at the end of a bed, or in front of your kitchen work area.
Square
A square rug adds a sophisticated and unexpected twist to your space. The same rules for placement apply as those for rectangular rugs.
Square rugs are great for under square or round dining tables, and in living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices, and can also create a focal point in a larger, open concept space.
Round
Round rugs can be used much like rectangular rugs, observing the same rules of size and placement, but they can have the added benefit of making a room seem larger while also adding a cozy, soft feeling.
Round area rugs naturally make a perfect focal point, especially delineating a particular ares in an open space, and instantly make a seating area more comfy and conversational.
Oval
Oval area rugs also add a sense of coziness to a room and take up less space than their rectangular counterparts. An oval rug is also perfect to provide contrast to an area with sharp lines and square furnishings.
A large oval area rug is also great under an oval or rectangular dining table and chairs, again, making sure it is large enough to have the legs of all chairs on it when pulled out.
In addition, an oval area rug also makes an entryway instantly welcoming and is also a perfect accent at the end of your bed.
Octagonal
An octagonal rug may be the least expected non-traditional rug shape, and more versatile than you may think.
Like other are rugs, an octagonal rug can be used to define an area and serve as a focal point in a room. Octagonal rugs are perfect for a cozy seating area in a bedroom, in a wide entryway or under a round or square dining table.
