All About Seriously Soft Jute Rugs

Although not quite as soft as wool or cotton, many find jute fibers to be surprisingly soft. While other popular natural fibers such as sisal, seagrass and hemp have earned their reputations for being beautiful and durable, but rigid and scratchy,  jute, in part because it's produced in a wet climate, is inherently softer.

An Elle Decor article, "What Is a Jute Rug? Everything you need to know about this common decor staple," provides a perfect explanation why jute is a designer favorite. "Jute is a natural fiber that is derived from corchorus plants and is commonly used in the world of home decor for everything from rugs to upholstery. Often referred to as the golden fiber because of its silky nature, it's primarily found in Bangladesh and India. Jute's natural brown hue makes it perfect for masking unsightly stains. It can be easily vacuumed and spot-cleaned with mild soap and water. Plus, it's affordable and eco-friendly, as it's recyclable and biodegradable."

Jute rugs are great for layering (check out our blog post, "Five Easy Ways to Layer Rugs") or as an attractive, neutral anchor for bolder furnishings. And in addition to the traditional un-dyed, un-patterned natural jute area rug, jute rugs also come in a variety of beautiful colors, patterns and styles (see the blog post, "Jute Rugs Are Not All Tan. Far From It").

In addition, jute rugs are naturally anti-static, noise-insulating and fire- and moth-resistant, but should not be exposed to high moisture or harsh chemicals.

Here are just a few examples of soft and sophisticated jute area rugs, and we invite to explore our entire collection
