Choosing the Right Size Area Rug for Your Space
An Interior Design Primer
Choosing the right rug size for your space is just as important as choosing the right style, fiber or shape. Opt for a rug that's too large, and it can overwhelm your room. Opt for a rug that's too small, and it can make your space seem small and disjointed.
But while it may seem overwhelming choosing the right size rug that perfectly frames your space, it's actually easy with the help of some interior designer tips. Here is a basic primer for your reference.

Dining Room
Rule of Thumb

8' x 10' and 9' x 12'

Hallways and Entryways
Rule of Thumb
An are rug in a hallway or entryway should have 4 to 6 inches of floor showing around the rug's border.
Pro Tip
In a foyer, a rug should feel like a generous welcome, not just a mat to wipe your feet.
Typical Hallway and Entryway Sizes
Typical lengths for hallway runners are 8', 10' and 12'. Choose a length that is 12" to 18" shorter than the length of the hall. An entryway rug should be at least as wide as the door(s).
