Must-Know Tips for Using a Bamboo Area Rug Outdoors

Because they're typically made with synthetic materials, you won't find indoor/outdoor rugs on Natural Rug Co. - with one exception. 

You may surprised to learn that bamboo area rugs may be used indoors or out. When used outdoors, however special care must be taken.

There are two major caveats you must be aware of before purchasing a bamboo area rug for outdoor use.

Keep it Covered

Bamboo area rugs can actually handle changes in temperature and humidity quite well, but they’re not meant to be left in uncovered areas. If you're looking to use a bamboo area rug outside, make sure it's in a gazebo, three-season room, or other covered area. 

Fight the Fade

Like many things left in direct sunlight, a bamboo rug will fade if exposed to the sun's rays for a prolonged period of time. It's important to note, however, that while fading will change the look of your bamboo area rug, it won't change its function or quality. In fact, many Natural Rug Co. customers own bamboo area rugs that have been in sunny spots for years.

Bamboo rugs left exposed to direct sunlight won't lose all their color, but fading is something to keep in mind. If your bamboo rug is used outdoors - or indoors for that matter - where it gets partial or direct sun exposure for more than an hour or two each day, just be sure to occasionally rotate it so that it fades consistently throughout.

Bonus Tip: Keep it Clean

Bamboo is an extremely low-maintenance material, but whether used indoors or out, it's important to keep your bamboo area rug clean.

To prevent dirt buildup, gently shake out your bamboo rug regularly. If your rug is too large to shake out, simply use a vacuum on a hardwood setting to avoid potential scraping. 

Also, immediately wipe up any spills by dabbing with a damp cloth or paper towel. And remember to never use chemicals on your bamboo area rug.
