The Best Chair Mat for Your Herman Miller Aeron
The Aeron is one of the most popular ergonomic office chairs ever made, and for good reason. But, its casters can be surprisingly picky about what they're rolling on. If you've noticed your Aeron sticking, dragging, or just not rolling smoothly on a standard plastic mat, the mat itself is very likely the problem.
Why Plastic Mats and Aeron Casters Don't Get Along
Herman Miller's own support guidance points to a common issue: the Aeron's standard 2.5" carpet casters are made of plastic, and plastic-on-plastic contact with a typical PVC chair mat can create friction and "stick," rather than rolling smoothly.
This is a frequent complaint even with expensive Aeron chairs sitting on premium plastic mats. The material pairing itself is the issue, not the mat's price tag.
A bamboo chair mat solves this at the surface level. Instead of a soft, slightly tacky plastic surface, you get a hard, smooth, consistent surface that both carpet and hard-floor casters glide across easily. The experience is closer to rolling on a hardwood floor than a plastic mat.
Matching Mat Size to Your Aeron
Aeron chairs come in three sizes — A (small), B (medium), and C (large) — and the larger sizes, along with wider armrests, mean the chair needs more clearance to swivel and roll without the base or arms hanging off the edge of the mat. As a general guideline:
Size A or B Aeron, standard desk: Our Standard Bamboo Chair Mat, Roll-Up, No Lip covers typical swivel range comfortably.
Size C Aeron, or frequent chair movement/reclining: Size up to our Deluxe Bamboo Chair Mat, Roll-Up, No Lip for extra clearance on all sides.
Standing desk or a desk you roll away from often: The Ultra Deluxe Bamboo Tri-Fold Chair Mat gives you the largest surface area and extra durability for high-movement setups.
With Lip or No Lip for a Standing Desk?
If your Aeron sits at a standing desk you raise and lower, a mat with lip (like the Deluxe Bamboo Chair Mat, Roll-Up, With Lip) tucks under the desk and stays put even as the desk height changes throughout the day. If your desk is fixed-height, a no-lip mat gives you a bit more flexibility to reposition the chair around the whole mat surface.
Carpet vs. Hard Floor Casters
Before you buy, it's also worth checking which casters your Aeron currently has installed. Herman Miller sells both carpet casters and hard-floor casters, and using the wrong type for your actual mat surface can cause the same sticking or dragging complaint people sometimes blame on the mat itself.
A bamboo mat's hard, consistent surface performs well with either caster type, which removes one more variable from the equation.
