Why Wool Rugs Are a Great Choice for Winter

When the floor feels cold, a rug can make a room more comfortable without changing the thermostat. Wool is a natural choice for winter: its fibers give a rug a soft, insulating feel underfoot and it instantly brings warmth and texture to a space.

Here’s what makes wool appealing in cold weather, what research has to say about wool and indoor air.

Why does a wool rug feel warm underfoot?

Wool fibers have a natural crimp, or gentle wave. Within a wool rug, that structure helps create small pockets of air, which slow the transfer of heat. The result is a cozy surface that can feel more comfortable underfoot than a bare hard floor.

While a wool rug doesn’t heat the room,  in the places you walk, sit, or get out of bed, wool can add a welcome layer of softness and comfort.

What does research say about wool and indoor air?

Wool’s winter appeal may extend beyond how it feels, which is something to note in a season where doors and windows are rarely open to let fresh air in.

In The Removal of Indoor Air Contaminants by Wool Textiles (2015), AgResearch scientist Steve McNeil summarizes studies in which wool carpet and wool yarn absorbed certain pollutants, including formaldehyde and nitrogen oxides. The bulletin also reports that wool carpet showed little re-emission of some absorbed pollutants, as well.

How to make a wool rug work for winter

When using a wool rug in winter, be sure to choose a size large enough for the space. In a living area, that means placing the front legs of the main seating on the rug to visually anchor the space. In a bedroom, look for enough coverage to give your feet a soft landing when you get up.

Think about the months beyond winter, too. A versatile neutral wool rug  can feel at home in a room year-round, even as you switch to lighter bedding and textiles.

While a wool rug won’t warm your whole home or replace fresh air, what it can do is make cold floors feel more comfortable, add softness to a room, and provide useful insulating properties. That makes wool a thoughtful choice for winter, and for the seasons that follow.
