Interior designers love vintage rugs, and for good reason. There's a warmth and imperfection to a hand-knotted rugs that's lived a few decades that no new rug can fake. But "buy vintage" isn't always the practical advice it sounds like.
The Problem With Buying Vintage
Condition is a gamble.
Moth damage, dry rot, and worn foundations are common in rugs that are 40+ years old, and they're not always visible in a listing photo.
Authenticity can be hard to verify.
The terms "vintage-style" and "genuine vintage" get used interchangeably by resellers, and provenance is rarely well documented.
Over-restoration is common.

The rugs currently selling as "vintage" for a premium were, at some point, just a new rug someone bought because they liked it. The difference between a rug that becomes a treasured vintage piece and one that becomes threadbare in five years comes down to two things: material and construction.
