Handmade Natural Fiber vs. Machine-made Synthetic Rugs

        Craftsmanship

Handmade natural fiber rugs are artisan-crafted, rich in character, and each rug is unique vs. mass-produced rugs that are uniform in appearance and void of character and craftsmanship.

        Eco-friendliness

The fibers of natural rugs are sustainably-sourced, biodegradable, and renewable vs. machine-made synthetic rugs that contain non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals, are not biodegradable, and require energy-intensive manufacturing.

        Health impact

Handmade natural fiber rugs contain low or no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and are non-toxic and mite- and mold-resistant vs. machine-made synthetic rugs that bring potential VOCs and allergens into your home.

        Aesthetic appeal

Handmade natural fiber rugs have rich texture, organic warmth, and artisanal charm vs. machine-made synthetic rugs that have a smooth finish and favor consistency over character.

Desert Willow Wool & Jute Rug FAQs

Do jute rugs feel scratchy underfoot?

Jute has a natural texture that’s firmer than wool or synthetic fibers but feels softer underfoot than most people assume. Jute softens with traffic and time, but if you want something plush beside you bed for bare feet to land on, you may want to opt for wool.

Can I use a jute rug in my kitchen or bathroom?

Your kitchen maybe, but we wouldn’t recommend jute for a bathroom. Jute absorbs moisture, which can cause it to weaken, discolor or develop mildew over time. It performs best in low-humidity spaces – especially living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and entryways/hallways.

Do jute rugs require a rug pad?

Rug pads are highly recommended. A non-slip pad protects jute fibers and the floor beneath, keeps the rug in place, and adds some extra cushion underfoot. In addition, some but not all jute rugs are reversible, so using a rug pad greatly extends the life of the rug.

Is this rug soft enough for a bedroom?

Yes, wool is one of the softest natural fibers available, and is especially well-suited for bedrooms, reading nooks, and anywhere you want a comfortable underfoot feel. Our wool rugs are handcrafted and get softer with use.

Will a wool rug work for someone with allergies?

Wool is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mite, mold, and mildew, making it a better choice than synthetic alternatives for allergy-sensitive households. If you have a specific wool allergy, we recommend consulting with your doctor before purchasing.

Is wool durable enough for a high-traffic area?

Wool is naturally resilient and bounces back from foot traffic better than most fibers. It’s a great choice for living rooms and hallways.

Does this rug need a rug pad?

Yes, a quality rug pad is highly recommended. A rug pad prevents slipping, protects the floor beneath the rug, and adds extra cushion that complements the softness of the wool. It also helps the rug lie flat and stay in position.

How long will it take for my order to arrive?

Your order ships directly from the supplier(s), typically within 1-2 business days of purchase. Shipments are via UPS Ground, except for oversize rugs. You will receive tracking information on your order as soon as it becomes available.

What if I want to make a return?

We accept returns within 30 days of delivery on rugs in original condition and packaging. Contact customerservice@naturalrugco.com for a Return Authorization (RA) number, and we will provide simple instructions. A refund will be made as soon as the supplier receives the product back in its original condition.
