Predicting the Top 5 Interior Design Trends for 2027

Every year we watch design move a little further away from mass-produced, disposable decor and a little closer to spaces built around real materials, real craftsmanship, and how a room actually feels to live in.

Our 2026 trends roundup covered where things stood this year. Here is where we see things heading in 2027.

1. Deeper, More Personal Material Stories

2026 was about handcraft and authenticity in general. In 2027, we expect that to get more specific, with people wanting to know exactly where a material came from and how it was made, not just that it was "natural." Expect more interest in fiber-specific storytelling, like bamboo sustainably harvested or jute rugs ethically produced, rather than "natural fiber" as a single catch-all category.

2. Function-First Textiles

Bamboo mats are not only beautiful and sustainable, they also resist moisture and pests.

As more of the home doubles as a workspace, gym, or studio, we expect rugs and mats to be chosen as much for what they do as how they look. This is already playing out with bamboo rugs, which resist moisture and pests in kitchens and entryways, and with bamboo chair mats replacing plastic ones in home offices.

Expect this "textile with a job to do" mindset to expand into more rooms in 2027.

3. Warmth Without Clutter

The warm tonal palettes we called out for 2026 (think terracotta, ochre, deep teal, layered neutrals) are not going anywhere, but we expect 2027 spaces to pair that warmth with more restraint elsewhere in the room, letting one or two natural, textural pieces (often the rug) carry the emotional warmth of a space instead of dense layering everywhere.

4. Rugs as Room Dividers

In open format spaces, natural rugs can serve to ground and visually distinguish distinct areas.

Open floor plans are not going away, but the desire to define zones within them is growing. We expect to see more homes using two or three rugs of different textures (say, a jute rug under a dining table and a wool rug anchoring a nearby seating area) to visually divide a single large room without adding walls or furniture.

5. Considered, Not Curated

The maximalist personalization trend from 2026 will keep growing, but we expect a shift in language from "curated" (which still implies performing for an audience) to "considered," meaning spaces that reflect a slower, more intentional accumulation of pieces over time rather than a single big purchase.
